Hugh A. O'Neill, son of Thomas Hugh O'Neill and Johanna Curtin, was born in San Francisco where the family moved around a lot. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Parish and graduated from Mission High School.
Hugh met his wife Elizabeth Spalding Moir when they were both working for Continental Insurance Company in San Francisco. It was during World War I that Hugh and Elizabeth eloped as far as their gas rations would take them, to Ukiah, Mendocino, California on 4 March 1917.
Elizabeth was born in Forfar, Angus, Scotland and immigrated to Oakland, Alameda, California in 1886 with her mother and siblings. Joining her father who had taken a job setting up and running the California Cotton Mill, arriving on 31 December 1884.
Hugh and Elizabeth's first home was at 4206 23rd Avenue San Francisco. By September 1918 they had bought their first house at 2535 Noble Avenue, Alameda, California where their son Hugh O'Neill Jr was born in November of that year. When Hugh Jr. was in high school the family moved to 3243 Thompson Avenue, Alameda, California. Known as "Christmas Tree Lane", it has it's own web site.
Hugh was an avid bridge player, an active member of the Alameda Elks Club and he loved lawn bowling at Lakeside Park in Oakland, California.
Elizabeth was a wonderful cook, loved to embroider and especially loved to go to Lake Tahoe and gamble. She'd get up early in the morning and take the "gambling bus" to Tahoe leaving a note for Hugh. He didn't like it, but she usually won.
