Dominic Harris was born on September 20, 1830 in Lubec, Maine. He was a seaman and around 1850 emmigrated to Welshpool, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. There he married Winifred Connor (born in 1834) at St. Patrick's Church in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on July 27, 1852. On August 6, 1863 they went to Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand on August 6, 1863, where he spent the remainder of his life.
"Dominic and his wife Winifred had six children, five of whom were born in Australia. The eldest, Mary Jane, died in infancy. The couple came to New Zealand in 1863, with Dominic helping to pay the family's passage by crewing on a cattle boat, the barque, Oregon, from Welshpool, Victoria, to Port Chalmers, Otago. For many years he ran a lighter, ferrying cargo and passengers from sailing vessels to the docks, and operated a quarry, ballasting ships with rock near the mouth of Otago Harbour. He and his wife and family also ran a small dairy farm and raised their children in an old stone cottage, which is now incorporated into a modern bed and breakfast house."

Dominic Harris died on December 19, 1906 in Hampden, New Zealand and is buried at the Hampden Cemetery. Winifred Harris died on September 28, 1928 of heart failure.
